What is Bitcoin?
Founded in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin was the first decentralized digital currency. While Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity is still a mystery, his online paper title Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System, which first described Bitcoin, has cemented Bitcoin’s placed as the first cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment system.
Bitcoin transactions are confirmed by a network of Bitcoin miners. These miners earn a small fee for processing the algorithms that confirm each transaction. Many cryptocurrencies today have the same concept of mining a digital currency.
Bitcoins are stored in a Bitcoin wallet. Many types of online and offline Bitcoin wallets, such as the Trezor wallet, are available to safely and securely hold or store Bitcoins.
